The basis for a collection is a treasury of Russian rulers and the idea of creation the museum originated from the Russian Emperor Peter the Great. But at the time of Peter the first there was not a museum. The first museum was set up in 1806, it operated in another building. It was too small for the collection of the museum, and this particular building was put up specially for the museum purposes, it was completed in 1851.

The exhibits can be seen in 9 rooms on 2 floors of this building. This building was put up as a museum. The staircases are decorated with 2 paintings, created by the Russian artist Сверчков, active in the 19-th century. He was inspired by the subjects from the Russian history.

Royal regalia — crown or cap, known as Monomakh’s cap. According to the legend, it was given to Russian rulers by a Byzantine emperor, representative of Monomakh dynasty, hence the name, but actually the legend is not a real fact. It was discovered that this cap was given to Russian rulers by  rulers of the Golden hoard. The Russians paid tribute to the Mongols. The cap was very important — it was used for coronations — Ivan 4 was the first one who was crowned by this cap as a tsar. It is believed that the czars wore the hat only once in their life — for the coronation. For other occasions other caps were made: cap of Kazan, used by Ivan 4. Both caps are made by gold and decorated with filigree technique and trimmed with sable. Sable fur cannot survive very long and every thirty years is replaced with a new one.

The main focus of the tour is a visit to the Armoury Chamber — Moscow`s first, and possibly its most important museum.
