[vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_empty_space height=”52px”][vc_column_text]The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a functioning male monastery, the spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery complex consists of 45 buildings and monuments. The main gate of the monastery – the Saint Gate with the Church of John the Baptist. Behind them is the largest building – the main Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady. To the northwest of the cathedral adjoins the small Godunov shrine. It contains the remains of Tsar Boris, his wife Maria, son of Feodor and daughter Xenia. Since the 17th century there the Russian metropolitans were also buried there. Next to the Cathedral is the church, dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. The interior paintings of the Trinity Cathedral were made by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny. In the 17th century due to the poor condition of the frescoes they were replaced by new ones. The iconostasis, consisting of 40 icons by Rublev of the 15th century, survived. The famous icon “Trinity” in 1930 was placed in the Tretyakov Gallery and replaced by a copy. Near the Holy Trinity Cathedral in the Mitropolit Chambers are the chambers of the patriarch.
